Train the Trainer: Facilitation Skills
A one-day workshop that turns subject experts into capable facilitators.
Overview
A one-day workshop that teaches subject experts, occasional trainers and L&D staff to design and run sessions where participants do the work. It covers adult learning, session design, instructions and questioning, structured debriefs, difficult moments and two micro-teach practice rounds with peer feedback. The pack includes a 44-slide deck with full speaker notes, participant workbook, five handouts and two case studies, all editable.
Format. One day. Designed for classroom delivery and adaptable to live online sessions.
Who it is for. Written for subject-matter experts asked to train colleagues, new and occasional trainers, HR and L&D staff who deliver internal sessions, and consultants formalising their facilitation practice. No prior training qualification is assumed. Participants should arrive with a real session they need to deliver, because they design and practise it during the day.
What delegates take away
- Distinguish facilitation from presenting and apply adult learning principles to session design.
- Design a session with observable outcomes, an activity rhythm and a workable run sheet.
- Give instructions that land first time, form groups and manage timing and energy.
- Use questioning, wait time and three-stage debriefs to turn activities into learning.
- Handle over-talkers, silent rooms, resistance and plan failure without losing the room.
- Deliver a short practice session and give and receive evidence-based feedback on it.
Course outline
Separates presenting, training and facilitating, and grounds the day in how adults actually learn: through relevance, experience and doing rather than receiving.
Participants write observable outcomes, structure an open-body-close arc, build an activity rhythm and produce a run sheet for a real upcoming session.
The first ten minutes, instructions that land first time, grouping and movement, and managing energy across a full day of delivery.
Wait time, question technique and the three-stage debrief that converts activities into learning, practised on the morning's own exercises.
Over-talkers, silent rooms, sent-here participants, collapsing timings and the facilitator's own nerves, worked through a scenario clinic and a full case study.
Two micro-teach rounds in trios with an observation checklist and structured feedback; every participant delivers, observes and participates.
Four evaluation questions drawn from Kirkpatrick's levels, then a 30-day plan naming a real session, three practices to build in and an observer.
