Overview

A scenario-based, self-paced e-learning course on effective delegation for managers. Learners step into a real hand-over moment, decide how much to let go and how to set it up, and watch how it plays out — then learn the seven-step approach that gets work off their plate without dropping the ball. Delivered as a SCORM 1.2 package for your LMS, with completion tracking.

Format. Self-paced, scenario-based e-learning. SCORM 1.2 — upload it to your LMS and completion tracks automatically.

Runtime. About 8 minutes of learner time, in one sitting. Measured from the narration in the package at the speed it plays, plus the time to read and answer what is on screen. It assumes you listen rather than reading ahead; times vary with the path you take and how fast you read.

Who it is for. Any organisation that wants to run this as self-paced learning; suitable for employees at any level.

What learners take away

  • Define effective delegation and its three elements: authority, accountability and responsibility.
  • Distinguish true delegation from instruction-giving using four levels of delegation.
  • Explain the benefits of delegation for the manager, the employee and the organisation, and the barriers that stop managers delegating.
  • Apply a seven-step delegation process, from deciding what to delegate through to judging results.
  • Plan a real delegation using the delegation planning worksheet.
  • Respond to six common delegation difficulties with an agreed course of action.

Course outline

Scene-setting and the four objectives the course works towards.

Participants identify the qualities of a strong delegator, then work through a dictionary definition, four levels of delegation and the elements of authority, accountability and responsibility.

Group work on what delegation gains the manager, the employee and the organisation, and on the reasons managers avoid delegating.

A reflective thinking exercise on current delegation habits, followed by a guided walk through seven steps, from deciding what to delegate to judging results, completed against the planning worksheet.

Participants discuss six difficult situations a delegating manager can face and are advised on a course of action for each.

The learning objectives are revisited to consolidate what participants can now do.
