Leading Hybrid and Remote Teams

A one-day course on leading teams you cannot see

One day 46 slides 5 handouts Editable PowerPoint and Word Instant download

Overview

A one-day course for managers whose teams split the week between office, home and other locations. It covers what distance changes about leadership, building trust on outcomes rather than observation, designing the team's communication channels, running meetings that include everyone, and managing performance and wellbeing remotely. Each participant leaves with a drafted team operating agreement and a 30-day plan. Every file is editable.

Format. One day. Designed for classroom delivery and adaptable to live online sessions.

Who it is for. Managers, team leaders and supervisors who lead hybrid, remote or distributed teams, plus HR and L&D professionals who support them. Open level: suits first-time managers of dispersed teams and experienced managers formalising what they have improvised since their team stopped sharing one office.

What delegates take away

  • Explain what changes about leadership when a team works across locations, and which in-person habits fail to travel.
  • Build trust on outcomes rather than observation, and counter proximity bias by design.
  • Design a communication architecture for the team: channels, response expectations and the split between synchronous and asynchronous work.
  • Run hybrid meetings and team rituals that include every member equally, wherever they work.
  • Manage performance, feedback and early signs of overload or isolation at a distance.
  • Draft a team operating agreement and a 30-day plan to put it in place.

Course outline

Defines hybrid, remote and distributed working, reviews what published evidence says about performance and promotion at a distance, introduces the three kinds of distance — physical, operational and affinity — and has participants diagnose which of their own in-person leadership habits no longer work.

Covers cognitive and affective trust and why distance starves the second, proximity bias and passive face time, productivity paranoia, and managing by outcomes rather than observation. Participants score themselves against ten trust behaviours in a structured audit.

The synchronous-asynchronous trade-off, defaulting decisions to writing, a channel map with response-time expectations, writing that carries tone, and the criteria for a meeting that deserves to exist. Groups sort twelve workplace messages into channels and defend their choices.

The two-tier team failure mode, psychological safety at a distance, chairing hybrid meetings so room voices do not dominate, and building connection through small regular rituals rather than forced events. Groups work a composite case study — an international or GCC version is supplied.

Clarity as the foundation of remote performance, the one-to-one and team cadence, giving feedback across a screen using the Situation-Behaviour-Impact structure, and spotting overload and isolation early. Trios practise two remote feedback conversations from the scenario handout.

The capstone. Each participant drafts a team operating agreement — working patterns, channels, meeting rules, decision records, feedback norms — pressure-tests it with a partner, and commits to a 30-day plan for agreeing it with their real team.
